Overview

Morristown Medical Center is seeking a FULL TIME Manager of Spiritual Care and Education in the Spiritual Care department primarily working 8-4pm.

Responsibilities

Summary of Position

The Manager of Spiritual Care and Education is both the manager of the Spiritual Care Department and actively conducts programs of ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education as an ACPE Certified Educator. As the manager of Spiritual Care, responsibilities include overseeing and ensuring the provision of spiritual care and education to patients, their loved ones, and, as appropriate, to team members; communicating and serving as a liaison between the local surrounding religious community and the Spiritual Care Department. As an ACPE Certified Educator, the manager is responsible to conduct programs of Clinical Pastoral Education under the standards of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE). The manager develops curriculum, supervises student's clinical work, provides educational opportunities, and evaluates students. This individual coordinates with other chaplain educators in the planning and administration of the overall education program. The Manager of Spiritual Care and Education reports to the Director of Clinical Services.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Creates a working environment that promotes positive employee engagement, adherence to company policies, effective communications, collaboration, innovation, optimal productivity, and continuous learning.
  • Cost/budget — directs department operations on a continuous basis and advises management on operational and functional improvement opportunities. Ensures that budget monitoring processes are in place and that appropriate action plans are established to address variances outside of established parameters. Identifies and implements ways to reduce and control expenses, as well as enhance revenues in the hospital and assigned areas.
  • Service-Focuses staff on continuously building customer satisfaction for patients, physicians, colleagues, the community, and other departments served. Engages staff in continually raising the bar in service excellence
  • Growth-Communicates effectively as hospital/system advocate to members of the community, continually seeks ways to promote organization to the public
  • Ensures the delivery of a complete program of spiritual care to patients, their loved ones and team members of all faith traditions by:
    • Actively participating in the delivery of pastoral care,
    • Ensuring that all requests for pastoral care are responded to in a timely manner,
    • Ensuring that appropriate worship opportunities are provided,
    • Ensuring that ritual and sacramental needs are met.
  • Supervise and facilitate the work of those delivering spiritual care including team members of the institution and chaplains appointed to the Spiritual Care Department by the faith communities.
    • Provide orientation and training according to institutional and JCAHO standards,
    • Conduct yearly performance reviews as appropriate,
    • Monitor time, attendance, and staffing,
    • Participate as appropriate in hiring and disciplinary processes.
  • Coordinate and onboard clergy, pastoral visitors, and volunteers from the religious community.
  • Support an interdisciplinary approach to spiritual care within the institution.
  • Oversee the use and maintenance of the spiritual care offices and chapel.
  • Develop and maintain proper procedures for the department in accordance with institutional
  • Conduct programs of CPE training according to ACPE standards.
  • Contribute to the community through publication, teaching, and research.
  • Participate in programs and administrative activities of the institution such as monthly leadership meeting, huddles, and other hospital-wide committees.

Qualifications

Must be certified as an ACPE Certified Educator or Associate Certified Educator by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education and remain in good standing with that organization. *

Working Conditions

  1. Some direct contact with patients using accepted universal personal protective equipment.
  2. Substantial time spent with students, team members, patients and their loved ones requiring a high degree of emotional energy who are experiencing pain and end of life situations.
  3. Must have the mobility to navigate the health institution's facilities which are handicapped

* This certification requires a college degree, a master's level theological degree or equivalent, several years of clinical training in chaplaincy and chaplaincy supervision, ordination or commissioning for ministry by a recognized religious group, a current endorsement for chaplaincy by a recognized religious group, and appearance before a national certifying commission for assessment of competency.
