Atlantic Health System is seeking a full-time Foundation Director, Major Gifts and Strategy for the Development Office located at 475 South Street in Morristown NJ.


Reports to: Chief Development Officer



  • Director of Gift Planning – Major Gifts portfolio only.  Planned Giving function reports to Chief Development Officer

  • Manage the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a portfolio of  principal gift prospects and donors ($500,000 and over).
  • Direct the Major Gifts Program which is responsible for securing gifts and pledges from former patients and community residents of $10,000 and above.
  • Supervise a team of three Major Gift Officers and an Associate; focused on raising the annual dollar goal for the major gifts program and capital campaign(s).
  • In collaboration with the major gifts team, develop an annual program plan with strategies, goals, timetable, and performance benchmarks.
  • Prepare and manage the major gifts program operating budget, and analyze expenses against gift income to continually improve cost efficiency and return on investment.
  • Develop and implement a long-range plan for the major gifts program as part of the Foundation’s strategic planning process, and the mission of the Medical Center. Working with the CDO, evaluate current MG program to assess opportunity and potential.
  • Implement and formalize moves management process, with individual and shared metrics. Work with the team to ensure clarity on MG expectations, tracking, and accountability.
  • Prepare and execute with the major gifts team a plan to engage physicians in the fundraising process.  This includes the enlistment, training, and recognition of physicians and measuring and reporting engagement activity.
  • With the assistance of the Director of Finance, maintain accurate and timely records and reports of the major gifts program’s progress and results.
  • Working with the Donor Research and Database team members and the major gifts team, supervise the prospect management system to provide a steady and growing stream of major gift prospects to the program.
  • Working with the gift accounting staff, ensure the prompt and accurate acknowledgement of major gifts.
  • Working with the donor relations team, ensure that all appropriate donor recognition is afforded major gift donors including annual stewardship reports, donor wall and honor roll listings, naming opportunities, and invitations to donor recognition events.
  • Working closely with the Chief Development Officer, collaborate on the development of campaign strategies, organizational structure, policies and procedures, plans and timetable.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of capital campaigns.
  • Responsible for oversight of Principal Gifts Committee and/or Capital Campaign Committee and the cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation of leadership gifts.
  • Supervise the identification, enlistment, and training of volunteers who will support the engagement and solicitation of prospective donors.
  • Work with the donor relations team and the major gifts team to develop an engagement plan and activities designed to deepen relationships with prospects and donors.
  • Establish and maintain strong and productive working relationships with department chairs, physicians, administrators, trustees, and community volunteers to engage them in the major gifts fundraising process.
  • Supervise the process of selecting, documenting, approving and tracking the fundraising progress of the annual and multi-year Funding Priorities identified by the medical departments and clinical services.
  • Acquire a strong understanding and knowledge of those clinical services the Foundation is supporting.  Work with the Foundation’s communications staff to prepare case statements, proposals, and printed materials in support of fundraising efforts.
  • Supervise a prospect clearance process to determine that major gift prospects are appropriately assigned, and to avoid potential overlapping assignments between Major Gift Officers and between System Foundations.
  • Oversee fundraising for AHS initiatives and campaigns as they evolve. Work collaboratively with AHS foundations and other internal stakeholders to ensure mutual success.



  • Strong interpersonal skills, self-confidence and assertiveness, diplomacy, teamwork, good judgment, respect for confidentiality, commitment to collaboration
  • Ability to represent the Foundation, Medical Center, and System to internal and external audiences through strong verbal and written skills
  • Requires strong organizational and good computer skills
  • Requires travel within the system's service area, and occasional work on evenings and weekends

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required


  • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) credential desirable

Relevant Experience:

  • 10+ years of demonstrated successful results in fund development, five to seven of which is in the field of major gifts fundraising
